Tristan da Cunha
Although unable to land, 16th century navigator Tristao
da Cunha named the rocky Atlantic island between Cape Horn and
Cape of Good Hope. Late colonized, the islanders lived off land
and sea. Large rowboats with simple mass and rigging were essential,
as was the strong canvas covering the timbers of the boat, making
up for a lack of wood.
